Inside the Piano, Outside the Box: works for bowed piano. Including the first work ever written for bowed piano – Rhapsodies, by C. Curtis-Smith – and a newly commissioned work by Vancouver-area composer John Oliver – Meditation for Barbara.
Beyond the Keys Workshop: 4 pm Room 113
A workshop exploring groundbreaking works for piano that use non-traditional piano sounds like bowed, prepared, and harp piano. We will look at how each piece was conceptualized, how to study them and perform them, how to use these techniques safely so that the piano is not affected, and discuss practical ways to use these non-traditional techniques in your own writing and performance.

Barbara performs the Sonatas and Interludes by John Cage, joining with Mile Zero Dance in their production of CAGE`D by Montreal-based dancer, creator and improviser Andrew de Lotbinière Harwood. Using methods inspired from the controversial American composer John Cage, Harwood will be joined by dance collaborators Lin Snelling and Gerry Morita. Accenting the soundscape and the dance will be the lighting design of Yan Lee Chan, one of Montreal`s brightest talents.

Presented biennially over three weeks in April and May, the Irving S. Gilmore International Keyboard Festival is internationally recognized as America’s most prestigious piano music festival. Now in its 24th year, nearly 100 events showcase some of the most notable and accomplished pianists and keyboard musicians in the world along with artists just emerging on the international stage.

Languorous landscapes and Gallic wit mingle in this French-accented program of music for winds and strings by Debussy, Faure, Honegger and Poulenc. Baritone Paul Soper who delighted our audiences last season with his portrayal of fashion designer Charles Worth in A Place of Beauty, will return to enchant you with songs en Français. A reception featuring French wines and cheeses provides the grand finale to our season. Oo-la-la!

New audio + visual works by Mark Cetilia, Akiko Hatakeyama, Stephan Moore, Caroline Park, Natasha Pradhan, and Kristina Wolfe.
Barbara will perform a premiere by composer Stephan Moore: Memorandom, a spontaneously notated piece composed from sounds heard previously in the concert.

A nighttime concert featuring music, video, poetry and all suitable for the moon. Mike Barnett’s Lunar Rhapsody portrays journeys under the moon (the real) and journeys to the moon (the imagined). Composer John Oliver’s pensive work, Meditation for Barbara for bowed piano, is counterbalanced by Sofia Gubaidulina’s jazzy virtuosic piano sonata, both performed by Barbara Lieurance. Allison Adair will be reading original poems. Chao-Jan Chang present multimedia work utilizing both video and sound. Cherry Kim performs the Dolcissimo movement from Grāmata čellam by Peteris Vasks, whose music has been described as symbolizing a dichotomy between humanistic ideals and desperate reality. The program opens and closes with Debussy’s classic Clair de Lune.

In this program Ms. Lieurance champions the compositional tour-de-force “Rhapsodies” by C. Curtis-Smith – the first piece to ever be written for bowed piano – along with a new commission inspired by the Rhapsodies by Canadian composer John Oliver. Other music includes the jazzy Russian virtuosity of Gubaidulina and the beautiful melodies of Brahms.
This will be a shortened (1 hour long) performance, followed by a wine reception.
