As a guest lecturer, Barbara Lieurance has been invited to Tufts University, Western Michigan University, the Portland Conservatory of Music, and the Winchester Community Music School, where she worked with students of piano and composition.

Beyond the Keys: find out how to transform the piano from an established instrument into a playground of exploratory sounds. Armed with tools ranging from fingernails to fishing line, Barbara Lieurance brings alive the music of Cage, Cowell, Curtis-Smith, Lachenmann, and Liang.
This program includes prepared piano, bowed piano, slide-piano, and other extended techniques. All techniques are completely safe and do not harm pianos. This demonstration can be geared toward students of piano, composition, or music history, and can also be presented to a general musical audience. “Barbara possesses the ability to expand the musical mind of students who she comes in contact with. She displays a passion for nurturing her students as individuals through a style that is both musically committed and compassionate. Barbara is able to quickly assess a student’s strengths and weaknesses and provide encouraging feedback for their musical growth. She has been a definite asset to the piano instruction portion of our programming.”
Susan Lawrence, Director of Educational Activities, Irving S. Gilmore International Keyboard Festival

“Barbara’s enthusiasm, potential, and maturity are all obvious in her work . . . The course also requires a Practicum in the NEC Preparatory School piano studios; the feedback from Barbara’s Preparatory School supervisors indicates that Barbara is equally as productive and successful in that manner of her teacher training. I have watched Barbara teach; her manner is professional, sincere, supportive of the student. Her comments and questions are perceptive.”
Jean Stackhouse, Emeritus Faculty/Director of Piano Pedagogy Program, New England Conservatory

    Students' Performance Opportunities [top]
Winchester Music Club Recitals: The Winchester Music Club is an association of music teachers in Winchester. Five times a year, their students join together to perform for each other. Recitals are organized by age group: for example, one recital is for grades 1-5, another 6-8, etc. The recitals take place in Winchester, and all students are welcome after having studied piano for one year.

Studio Recital: An end-of-year recital in which all students play, regardless of age or level. This usually takes place in the spring, also in Winchester.

Annual National Piano Playing Auditions: The primary function of the National Guild of Piano Teachers (NGPT) is to establish definite goals and awards for piano students of all level and grades. To meet this function, a curriculum encompassing the best of piano literature has been standardized, and a system of non-competitive evaluation has been created. Participating students will prepare a program that they have chosen with their teacher, and in the spring they will perform this program for the NGPT adjudicator, a well-qualified musician. They then receive feedback about their performance as well as a certificate and pin that celebrates their achievement.
